Despite Myself

ancient iguanas

The seasons pass,

and still my feet

follow

the same

path.

Distraction is

it’s name,

and it leads me

away

from today.

It plays

a game,

that

is often

unclear,

as it

skillfully

manipulates

my

fears.

It steers

me again,

and again,

into a state

of forgetting.

My thoughts

wander,

to exotic locales.

Imagination

feeds me

sugary,

sweet treats,

that in the end

leave me

wanting.

It’s a struggle

to stay put,

and befriend

the person

I’ve become.

When

I

seek to

obscure

my pain,

it negates

the progress

I have made.

I gaze

dully

at the rain

and like the clouds I float away…
